Michigan Proposal 2 – Vote No

Posted in Michigan by Wade Moline on October 29, 2008
Unlimited stem cell research is bad news. Michigan does not need this. The following proposal is too short to address the issue of stem cell research. Proposal 08-1, which addresses the issue of legalizing medical marijuana is longer containing 12 full pages. This proposal contains 1 1/2 pages.
I’ve highlighted the essential part below which says on the ballot itself (which is the short short version and the last line); Prohibit state and local laws that prevent, restrict or discourage stem cell research, future therapies and cures.
So basically, the supporters want unlimited stem cell research free of government control and “interference”.

PROPOSAL 08-2
PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT
A proposal to amend the State Constitution to address human embryo and
human embryonic stem cell research in Michigan. (Proposal provided under
an initiative petition filed with the Secretary of State on July 7, 2008.)
The proposal would add a new Section 27 to Article 1 of the State Constitution
to read as follows:

ARTICLE 1
Section 27.
(1) Nothing in this section shall alter Michigan’s current prohibition
on human cloning.
(2) To ensure that Michigan citizens have access to stem cell therapies and
cures, and to ensure that physicians and researchers can conduct the most
promising forms of medical research in this state, and that all such research is
conducted safely and ethically, any research permitted under federal law on human
embryos may be conducted in Michigan, subject to the requirements of federal law
and only the following additional limitations and requirements:
(a) No stem cells may be taken from a human embryo more than fourteen
days after cell division begins; provided, however, that time during
which an embryo is frozen does not count against this fourteen day
limit.
(b) The human embryos were created for the purpose of fertility treatment
and, with voluntary and informed consent, documented in writing, the
person seeking fertility treatment chose to donate the embryos for
research; and
(i) the embryos were in excess of the clinical need of the person
seeking the fertility treatment and would otherwise be discarded
unless they are used for research; or
(ii) the embryos were not suitable for implantation and would otherwise
be discarded unless they are used for research.
(c) No person may, for valuable consideration, purchase or sell human
embryos for stem cell research or stem cell therapies and cures.
(d) All stem cell research and all stem cell therapies and cures must be
conducted and provided in accordance with state and local laws of
general applicability, including but not limited to laws concerning
scientific and medical practices and patient safety and privacy, to the
extent that any such laws do not:

(i) prevent, restrict, obstruct, or discourage any stem cell research or
stem cell therapies and cures that are permitted by the provisions
of this section; or

(ii) create disincentives for any person to engage in or otherwise
associate with such research or therapies or cures.

(3) Any provision of this section held unconstitutional shall be severable from
the remaining portions of this section.

I was going through some of my older posts and found some that need to be brought up again. One deals with Obama’s speech in Germany where I commented on his communist and socialist ideals that he presented in his speech. Even then he was talking about spreading the wealth around.

From Casting Pearls Before Swine – Obama’s Vision for America

If you don’t believe that Obama is a Marxist you need to visit this site.

I was behind the Iron Curtain before it fell. Thanks to my world traveling parents I got to see Moscow, the Kremlin, and St. Basil’s Cathedral. I was young, but I remember it clearly. It made an impression. My father was an avid photographer. As we travelled by train across the entire length of Russia, at one point my father was removed from the train and was accused of being a spy because of all the photos he took. His saving grace was that he had his family along. He was let go, but looking back I am sure that he was watched the rest of our journey.

The Russian people were not a happy people. That was very clear to us. My parents and us kids were dressed in American attire. We stood out. We were easily noticed by everyone. No question we were not Russians. The Russian people were nice to us even though we had no clue what they were saying. One thing was clear though, they were not afraid of us despite the propaganda of that era. These are memories I will carry always.

My mother and her family fled Hitler’s Nazi Germany in fear of their lives. They were proud and patriotic German citizens, until Hitler rose to power. They did not agree with Hitler and what he was doing and had to flee because of that. They came to the US and became proud and patriotic US citizens. It was tough for them at first because at the time Germans were suspect and treated differently, sometimes harshly here in the states. My mother recalls being made fun of for being German, all due to Hitler and the war. They were even hated by some despite despising Hitler. Yet they persevered. During the flight to the US, many relatives did not make it and have never been heard from since. Because of their blond hair and blue eyes, some of the women were taken to breed Hitler’s master race. What happened to them will never be known.

This is why I am afraid of Obama getting elected. My family has been through much and seen much. This has caused all of us to be conservative and very patriotic, something that has been passed on to the next generation, love of God, love of country. I have a cousin who works for the NSA. He serves his country to preserve our freedoms. Just as I care about my community and have spent 25 years preserving it and lives as a firefighter, other members of my family have served in other ways for a lifetime, because they care about this country. My grandfather was a proud member of the US 7th Cavalry. My father and mother started the first high school north of the Arctic Circle in Kotzebue, Alaska in the 1950s.

Voting for Obama will undermine this country’s great history of fighting for and creating our freedoms, and fighting for the freedoms of other people and nations. Look at the photo in the header of this site. I took it myself at one of our memorial day parades. Isn’t this what America is all about summed up in one photo? Proud to be American, not ashamed of my country, and FREE!

Entitlement

Posted in The Constitution, The Holy Bible by Wade Moline on October 28, 2008

After getting to work today I decided to do some research during my spare moments between calls. I opened up Cornerstone Bible on my Macbook with the intention of adding an article on why I posted about California’s Proposal 8, and why I believe the way I do, and what the Bible really has to say about homosexuality. Well, that post is going to have to wait because by irony or God’s divine will, today’s devotional is about entitlement. Somewhere (can’t remember where) I had posted a reply that entitlement goes against what America stands for and what the Holy Bible teaches. This devotional pretty much backs that up.
Today’s devotional follows.

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God” John 1:12

Right – The Greek word is exousian. This word means “permission” or “authority”. The root behind this word carries the meaning of having the power to do something. But in this verse we need to notice carefully that this power or authority is not something that we have in ourselves nor is it something that we can claim as an entitlement. We only receive it as a gift.

Entitlement and rights are very much in vogue today. People and groups who believe that their “rights” are under attack and that they are entitled to fair treatment or special consideration constantly bombard us. But the Bible takes a different view of this. What we have is given to us as a gift, not as something we deserve or earn. God is gracious enough to provide many gifts to His children, even when we do not appreciate His goodness. So many times we act as though our possessions belong to us because we “earned” them. We often treat life the same way. “I deserve a better life.” “I worked hard for what I have. It’s mine!” Whatever the reasoning, entitlement ignores the God who provides everything.

In this verse, John tells us that the most important factor of Life cannot be earned and is not an entitlement. Our relationship with God depends entirely on the permission given to us by Christ. Without His permission, we are excluded from this relationship. There is no entitlement, only gift.

How much of our lives would change if we began each day by asking permission from God to operate in His world? How many of our struggles would disappear if we realized that we are not “entitled” except by His permission? How would my life change if I put my concern for my “rights” in the hands of God? What if I just concentrated on the one right that I have been given the right to become His child?

Entitlement is not a right. As far as God’s salvation and forgiveness is concerned, it is a gift that is freely given, all we have to do is ask and it is given. As far as worldly things go, like material goods and possessions, we are to work for it and then give a percentage back to God. Material possessions are benefits, just like the freedoms we have for living in this country. No one is entitled to money from the government, it is not to be given freely, and that was never the intention of our forefathers who founded this country.

The only things we are entitled to by the Constitution is life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Nothing in the Constitution says or insinuates that we are entitled to free universal healthcare provided for by the government, nowhere does it say that we are entitled to free money from the government for life without holding a job or doing anything in return. The government is to ensure our safety (life), freedoms (liberty), and our goal to pursue our dreams (pursuit of happiness) as long as our pursuits don’t violate the rights of others in their life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. The Constitution does not say that the government MUST pursue our happiness for us or give it to us or that we are entitled to it. We are responsible for our own pursuits, period. If someone violates your life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness, you are entitled to justice. That is it.

The government is not our keeper, we are the keepers of the government. We are not to be fed, housed, or clothed by the government, we are to do that ourselves. That is the way America was set up and it has worked fine. America is a republic with a Democracy style government, not a Socialism style, not a Communism style, not a Marxism style, but a Democracy style. As Sir Winston Churchill once said,

Democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.

I did find my posting over at Flopping Aces.

“Forgiveness must be asked for, it is not freely given, just as nothing in life is freely given, you must do something first in order to receive, in other words, you have to earn it and work for it. That is what the Bible teaches and the way that this country works.”
