Michigan Proposal 2 – Vote No
So basically, the supporters want unlimited stem cell research free of government control and “interference”.
PROPOSAL 08-2
PROPOSED CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT
A proposal to amend the State Constitution to address human embryo and
human embryonic stem cell research in Michigan. (Proposal provided under
an initiative petition filed with the Secretary of State on July 7, 2008.)
The proposal would add a new Section 27 to Article 1 of the State Constitution
to read as follows:ARTICLE 1
Section 27.(1) Nothing in this section shall alter Michigan’s current prohibition
on human cloning.(2) To ensure that Michigan citizens have access to stem cell therapies and
cures, and to ensure that physicians and researchers can conduct the most
promising forms of medical research in this state, and that all such research is
conducted safely and ethically, any research permitted under federal law on human
embryos may be conducted in Michigan, subject to the requirements of federal law
and only the following additional limitations and requirements:(a) No stem cells may be taken from a human embryo more than fourteen
days after cell division begins; provided, however, that time during
which an embryo is frozen does not count against this fourteen day
limit.(b) The human embryos were created for the purpose of fertility treatment
and, with voluntary and informed consent, documented in writing, the
person seeking fertility treatment chose to donate the embryos for
research; and(i) the embryos were in excess of the clinical need of the person
seeking the fertility treatment and would otherwise be discarded
unless they are used for research; or(ii) the embryos were not suitable for implantation and would otherwise
be discarded unless they are used for research.(c) No person may, for valuable consideration, purchase or sell human
embryos for stem cell research or stem cell therapies and cures.(d) All stem cell research and all stem cell therapies and cures must be
conducted and provided in accordance with state and local laws of
general applicability, including but not limited to laws concerning
scientific and medical practices and patient safety and privacy, to the
extent that any such laws do not:
(i) prevent, restrict, obstruct, or discourage any stem cell research or
stem cell therapies and cures that are permitted by the provisions
of this section; or
(ii) create disincentives for any person to engage in or otherwise
associate with such research or therapies or cures.
(3) Any provision of this section held unconstitutional shall be severable from
the remaining portions of this section.Related – Right To Life of Michigan

Entitlement
After getting to work today I decided to do some research during my spare moments between calls. I opened up Cornerstone Bible on my Macbook with the intention of adding an article on why I posted about California’s Proposal 8, and why I believe the way I do, and what the Bible really has to say about homosexuality. Well, that post is going to have to wait because by irony or God’s divine will, today’s devotional is about entitlement. Somewhere (can’t remember where) I had posted a reply that entitlement goes against what America stands for and what the Holy Bible teaches. This devotional pretty much backs that up.
Today’s devotional follows.
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God” John 1:12Right – The Greek word is exousian. This word means “permission” or “authority”. The root behind this word carries the meaning of having the power to do something. But in this verse we need to notice carefully that this power or authority is not something that we have in ourselves nor is it something that we can claim as an entitlement. We only receive it as a gift.
Entitlement and rights are very much in vogue today. People and groups who believe that their “rights” are under attack and that they are entitled to fair treatment or special consideration constantly bombard us. But the Bible takes a different view of this. What we have is given to us as a gift, not as something we deserve or earn. God is gracious enough to provide many gifts to His children, even when we do not appreciate His goodness. So many times we act as though our possessions belong to us because we “earned” them. We often treat life the same way. “I deserve a better life.” “I worked hard for what I have. It’s mine!” Whatever the reasoning, entitlement ignores the God who provides everything.
In this verse, John tells us that the most important factor of Life cannot be earned and is not an entitlement. Our relationship with God depends entirely on the permission given to us by Christ. Without His permission, we are excluded from this relationship. There is no entitlement, only gift.
How much of our lives would change if we began each day by asking permission from God to operate in His world? How many of our struggles would disappear if we realized that we are not “entitled” except by His permission? How would my life change if I put my concern for my “rights” in the hands of God? What if I just concentrated on the one right that I have been given the right to become His child?
Entitlement is not a right. As far as God’s salvation and forgiveness is concerned, it is a gift that is freely given, all we have to do is ask and it is given. As far as worldly things go, like material goods and possessions, we are to work for it and then give a percentage back to God. Material possessions are benefits, just like the freedoms we have for living in this country. No one is entitled to money from the government, it is not to be given freely, and that was never the intention of our forefathers who founded this country.
The only things we are entitled to by the Constitution is life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Nothing in the Constitution says or insinuates that we are entitled to free universal healthcare provided for by the government, nowhere does it say that we are entitled to free money from the government for life without holding a job or doing anything in return. The government is to ensure our safety (life), freedoms (liberty), and our goal to pursue our dreams (pursuit of happiness) as long as our pursuits don’t violate the rights of others in their life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. The Constitution does not say that the government MUST pursue our happiness for us or give it to us or that we are entitled to it. We are responsible for our own pursuits, period. If someone violates your life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness, you are entitled to justice. That is it.
The government is not our keeper, we are the keepers of the government. We are not to be fed, housed, or clothed by the government, we are to do that ourselves. That is the way America was set up and it has worked fine. America is a republic with a Democracy style government, not a Socialism style, not a Communism style, not a Marxism style, but a Democracy style. As Sir Winston Churchill once said,
Democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.
I did find my posting over at Flopping Aces.
“Forgiveness must be asked for, it is not freely given, just as nothing in life is freely given, you must do something first in order to receive, in other words, you have to earn it and work for it. That is what the Bible teaches and the way that this country works.”
